Shilpa is an 11-year-old who wants to become both a pastor and a police officer. She recently said, "I want to serve poor and needy. When I see poor, my heart is crying for them." Shilpa is kind, cares for those around her and is a funny little girl with a killer smile.
Shilpa's path to Grace House India comes with some heartbreaking twists and turns. When she and her sister Anjali were very young, their parents abandoned the girls and moved to another city, leaving them with an elderly grandmother who has kidney failure.
Unable to provide even basic necessities, their grandmother sent the girls into the streets and temples to beg. A kind man in their village took the girls to a local orphanage, where he believed they would receive better care. When he instead learned they had been neglected and beaten, he returned them to the village – where they resumed their daily routine of begging in the streets and temples for their grandmother.
Upon learning of Grace House, this kind man once again approached the sister, telling them he had found them a new home. Fearing the worst, the girls begged him, "Please, Uncle, don't sell us!"
With nothing but the clothes on their backs – no bags, not even shoes on their dirty little feet – these girls entered our gates fearing a repeat of the abuse experienced at their prior home.
Their fear turned to absolute joy once they realized they were in a home where they would be loved and protected. It has been a blessing to watch them blossom and become confident both in themselves and in their surroundings. Knowing they are home, there will be no more abandonment or abuse... ever.
A monthly sponsorship of a child at Grace House India is used to cover all our girls' living expenses. These expenses include clean water, nutritious meals, a private, Christian education, school supplies, tutoring, her clothing and any routine medical care and medications. No administrative expenses are ever taken from your contribution, 100% of your giving is directed exactly as you designate. * Dipali is partially sponsored and needs an additional $95 monthly to complete her sponsorship.
